In 2006, Rob Ley and Joshua G. Stein began researching the potential for SMA technology to impact the social and physical environments. Since that time, they have pooled the resources of their two studios to pursue this research through the production of the Reef series. These installations aim to connect the scientific and technological with the realities of the spatial and the everyday.
